Clinical Tip

Your Antifungal Dream Team!

Fungus loves to get into (infiltrate) hair, skin, and nails. If your client has athletes’ foot or fungal nails, you need to manage all areas that fungus can infiltrate (hair, skin, and nails).  After appropriate clinical chairside treatment, you need to post-op all areas with products that will combat the fungus and heal the tissues.  if you only treat one of the areas e.g. the nails only, then the fungus can continue to thrive on the skin and potentially reinfect the nails. This will prolong the healing rate and make it frustrating for you and your client.  However, if you manage all potential areas, the fungus has nowhere to go.  Other surfaces that you need to take care of at the same time include the inside of all footwear (need to be disinfected to minimize potential of re-infection, as fungus thrives in dark moist areas).  Adding warm saltwater foot soaks in the ongoing management plan will help to draw out the fungus from the pores and promotes healthy skin.  Once the foot environment becomes healthy again, it will be difficult for any remaining fungus to survive.

Give directions to your client to perform a daily anti-fungal cleansing regimen. This will help prevent/combat any new fungus from infiltrating the areas that are being managed at the clinic.  This should also help improve clinical outcomes.
